Family Fun in Nafplion: A Perfect Getaway with Kids

If you're planning a family-friendly trip in Greece, Nafplion (Ναύπλιο) is a gem you shouldn’t miss. This charming seaside town, just a couple of hours from Athens, combines history, beauty, and relaxation in a way that makes it ideal for a weekend getaway with kids. Here’s how to make the most of your time there with little explorers in tow.

🗺️ Stroll the Old Town or take the Mini Train 🚂

Start your visit in Nafplion’s pedestrian-friendly Old Town. With colorful neoclassical buildings, flower-filled balconies, and cobblestone alleys, it’s a joy to explore—especially for children who love the freedom of walking without cars nearby. Check out the handmade toys and gifts at SourLouloudia (Kotsonopoulou 4 - Old town, Nafplio) or grab a refreshing gelato at one of the many ice cream shops and let them roam a bit!

Young children will especially enjoy the mini train ride, which is 20 minutes long and is carefully designed to take you to all the famous sights in Nafplio. It has an English audio-guide and cost is 3 euros per child and 5 euros per adult. The children will especially love seeing the Bavarian Lion, an impressive sculpture created on the slope of a small hill in the new part of town.

🏰 Palamidi Fortress: History Meets Adventure

For active families, the 999-step climb to Palamidi Fortress is a fun challenge with a huge reward: breathtaking views over the Argolic Gulf. But if your kids are younger or not in the mood for a stair workout, you can also drive to the top. The castle itself is full of hidden nooks, tunnels, and stone chambers that spark the imagination.

⛵ Visit Bourtzi by Boat

Hop on a short boat ride from the harbor to the island fortress of Bourtzi. It’s quick, inexpensive, and exciting for kids to be on the water. The view of Nafplion from the sea is worth it alone, and the little fortress is a fun place to explore.

🏛️ Archaeological Museum

If your children enjoy history (or you want to sneak in some learning), the Archaeological Museum in Syntagma Square has impressive exhibits, including ancient armor and pottery. It’s not overwhelming in size, which is great for younger kids with shorter attention spans. After the museum, head to Xenon Cafe at Syntagma Square and have a coffee and traditional loukoumades. The children can run around the open area of Syntagma while the parents enjoy some needed coffee and relaxation.

🏖️ Arvanitia Beach & Coastal Path

Arvanitia Beach is within walking distance of town and perfect for a swim or a picnic. The path to get there from the Old Town hugs the sea and is stroller-friendly, with dramatic cliff views. There’s also a nice playground in the center of town, perfect for a pit stop while parents enjoy a coffee.

🍽️ Where to Eat with Kids

Nafplion has plenty of family-friendly tavernas. Look for places with outdoor seating and space for kids to move around. Grilled meats, fresh pasta, and simple seafood dishes usually go over well with little ones. Don’t forget to try the local orange 🍊 pie!

- BOUNOS psarosavouras - highly recommend if you are looking for a traditional seafood taverna with excellent fish dishes here

- Xenon Cafe - basic eatery that is very kid-friendly with a diverse menu. Kids can play in Syntagma Square while parents drink coffee and enjoy a much needed respite.

- Valaora Resto Nafplio - If your kids are older and you would like something truly special (and a bit fancy), head to this stunning restaurant on the waterfront with amazing views. Excellent Greek food with a modern twist that will not disappoint.

- Antica Gelateria di Roma - This little ice cream shop is considered to have some of the best gelato in Nafplio, and we agree! We enjoyed the Stacciatella and Pistachio gelato, but there are soo many great flavors to choose from

Weekend Tips

  • Stroller access: Most of the Old Town is stroller-friendly, but the Palamidi steps are not. Consider a baby carrier if climbing.
  • Sun protection: The sun can be strong even in spring and autumn—bring hats and sunscreen.
  • Timing: Spring and fall are ideal seasons—pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and lots of space to explore.

Nafplion strikes a rare balance: rich in culture and history, yet laid-back and easy for families. Whether you’re there for a day or a long weekend, it offers a refreshing change of pace and plenty of kid-friendly fun.
